PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing titanium dioxide having a controlled phase of anatase, rutile, or brookite from the same starting raw material. SOLUTION: The method for producing titanium dioxide comprises the steps of mixing titanium trichloride, an oxidizing agent, and a pH regulator, and heating the resulting mixture in the mixing step at a temperature of 150°C or above, wherein the oxidizing agent is selected from the group consisting of ammonium persulfate, perchloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrogen peroxide, and the molar ratio of titanium Ti<SP>3+</SP>in titanium trichloride to the oxidizing agent is 1:1.
