PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an amorphous silica which comprises cleavable laminate particles in which SiO<SB>2</SB>thin layers are layered, is obtained by using vermiculite as a starting material and subjecting it to an acid treatment, shows advanced cleavage, has a low bulk density and lightweight and can be highly dispersed in a resin etc. in a small amount. SOLUTION: The lightweight amorphous silica comprises the cleavable laminate particles in which the SiO<SB>2</SB>thin layers are layered. In the amorphous silica, pores with a diameter of 0.024-8.70μm determined by a mercury intrusion technique account for a void volume of≥2.2 ml/g, the bulk density is≤0.19 g/ml, and the BET specific surface area is≤200 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
