<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device having a high contrast ratio by a simple method and to manufacture the high-performance display device inexpensively. <P>SOLUTION: In a display device having a display element between a pair of light-transmitting substrates, layers each including a polarizer having an extinction coefficient different from each other with respect to the absorption axes are stacked and provided on the outer sides of the light-transmitting substrates. In this case, the stacked polarizers on the viewer's side are arranged so that absorption axes are deviated from a parallel Nicols state.
