PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound video apparatus, wherein a screen saver is started at a side of video equipment which is capable of providing a higher-level sophisticated screen saver image. SOLUTION: A composite video apparatus 1 comprises a DVD control unit 8, a DVD player 10, a VCR control unit 9 and a VCR deck 11. The DVD control unit 8 includes a screen saver generation section 13. While the composite video apparatus 1 is in a VCR mode, the VCR control unit 9 decides whether screen saver initiation conditions are satisfied. If the screen saver initiation conditions are satisfied, the screen saver generation section 13 is operated, output from a video output section 14 is switched to a DVD, and a screen saver image is displayed on a screen 21 of a television 20.
