PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine waste time accurately and control an engine well. SOLUTION: Outputs from this engine system are detected one by one, and an average value of outputs and standard deviation are calculated when the engine system is steady. A period of time from the time tx when input into the engine system is changed to the time ty when output from the engine system is changed by exceeding an allowable upper limit or an allowable lower limit is decided as the waste time. The allowable upper limit is obtained by adding three times standard deviation to the average value, and the allowable lower limit is obtained by subtracting three times standard deviation from the average value.
