PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acrylic or a methacrylic acid-based copolymer useful for a detergent composition efficiently removing stains of clothes, etc., especially hydrophobic soil such as collar dirt or oil and fat dirt without re-depositing the soil on the laundry even when washing is carried out with a small amount of water and having an excellent re-deposition preventing ability. SOLUTION: The acrylic or methacrylic acid-based copolymer comprises≥30 to <95 mol% of a constituent unit (a) derived from an acrylic or a methacrylic acid-based monomer (A),≥5 to <70 mol% of a constituent unit (b) derived from a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate-based monomer (B), >0 to≤50 mol% of a constituent unit (c) derived from an alkyl (meth)acrylate-based monomer (C) and/or a constituent unit (d) derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer (D) [with the proviso that the sum total of the composition of the constituent units (a), (b), (c) and (d) is 100 mol%] as essential constituent units.
