PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transferring printer capable of preventing an ink ribbon from being wound by a ribbon winding reel under a ribbon taking-out condition with an outer diameter made smaller. SOLUTION: The ribbon winding reel 9 consisting of reel main bodies 94 and 95 fitted on a ribbon winding shaft 91, a rotating plate 92 loosely mounted on the ribbon winding shaft 91, and a winding shaft releasing lever 93 which switches the shapes of the reel main bodies 94 and 95 to a ribbon winding condition and the ribbon taking-out condition, fixes the rotating plate 92 with the ribbon winding shaft 91 in the rotating direction under the ribbon winding condition, and releases fixing under the ribbon taking-out condition, is used. When the rotating speed of the ribbon winding reel 9 detected using the rotating plate 92 by a rotation detecting part is slower by a predetermined rotating speed than the rotating speed of the ribbon winding shaft by a driving motor 12, printing operation is stopped.
