The method involves changing output signals of a contactless sensor e.g. capacitive or inductive sensor, based on function of a set of positions of a separation unit e.g. air conducting unit, of a cooking area. Each of the positions of the separate unit is determined over the output signals. An electrical and/or magnetic field of the sensor is continuously changed based on the set of positions of the separation unit. A distance of the separation unit of the cooking area and/or opening degree of the separation unit is detected. An independent claim is also included for a cooking device for executing a method for determining a set of positions of a separation unit of a cooking area.
