A process in which hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide impurities in a sulfur-containing exhaust gas are converted by oxidation without producing SO3 and thereby a mist of sulfuric acid is provided. A process for purifying an exhaust gas flow(1) from a combustion engine containing hydrocarbons, soot, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide comprises the steps of: (a) oxidizing the hydrocarbons and a portion of the soot in a first reactor(5) in the presence of a first catalyst that is active in oxidizing hydrocarbons and soot without oxidizing sulfur dioxide, and forming a partially purified exhaust gas flow(7); (b) cooling the partially purified exhaust gas flow; (c) oxidizing the carbon monoxide of the partially purified exhaust gas flow in a second reactor(12) in the presence of a second catalyst that is active in oxidizing carbon monoxide without oxidizing sulfur dioxide; and (d) withdrawing a purified exhaust gas flow(14).
