PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of achieving highly accurate focusing with high responsiveness. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus is provided with: an imaging and focus detection means 212 picking up an image formed by an imaging optical system 202 and also detecting the focusing state of the imaging optical system 202 on the basis of image deviation of a pair of images formed by a pair of luminous fluxes passing through a pair of pupil areas of the imaging optical system 202; and a focus detection means detecting the focusing state of the imaging optical system 202 on the basis of the image deviation of the pair of images formed by the pair of luminous fluxes passing through the pair of pupil areas of the imaging optical system 202, and performs the focusing of the imaging optical system 202 by selecting the imaging and focus detection means 212 and the focus detection means 207 in accordance with a photographing condition.
