PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To charge the whole secondary battery to the maximum allowable capacity, and to discharge an over-charged cell to a full charge voltage. SOLUTION: A charging method of the secondary battery sequentially performs a constant charging step of supplying an initial constant current to the cell of the secondary battery connected in series, and a multistage charging step of repeating procedures to reduce a charging current when a cell voltage corresponds to an over-charging limit voltage V2. A capacity adjusting process is provided for supplying the charging current to a discharge resistance R1 connected to the cell in parallel when the cell voltage corresponds to the full charge voltage. When the charging current to the cell is a set current Imin+αin the multistage charging step; the step is shifted to a full charging promotion step, and the cell is charged by a full charging promotion current Imin divided with the full charging voltage by the discharge resistance during performing the capacity adjusting step. After the lapse of a setting time; the full charging promotion step is finished to shift to a fine adjustment process, the charge is stopped during performing the capacity adjusting step, the cell whose voltage exceeds the full charging voltage is discharged, and the discharge is stopped if the cell reduces to the full charging.
