PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic ink character reader for achieving relative low costs. SOLUTION: This magnetic ink character reader is provided with a magnetic head for outputting a signal corresponding to the change of a magnetic flux due to magnetic ink characters, and configured to recognize a character string recorded in a recording medium by using one or more magnetic ink characters based on a signal to be output from the magnetic head. A peak interval data acquisition part 30 acquires peak interval data showing the peak interval of a signal to be output from the magnetic head. A reference peak interval data storage part 31 stores reference peak interval data by associating the reference peak interval data with each magnetic ink character. A comparison part 32 compares the peak interval data acquired by the peak interval data acquisition part 30 with the reference peak interval data stored in the reference peak interval data storage part 31.
