PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device for easily and stably performing gradation display in response to a digital signal. SOLUTION: A color liquid crystal display device includes; N type TFTs 42 to 45 and capacitors 46 to 48 which are connected between one electrode of a liquid crystal cell 2 and a common potential line 12 and constitute a variable capacitance circuit of which the capacitance value changes in accordance with lower data signals D4 and D5 out of image data signals D0 to D5; and a decoder 24 which selects one of a plurality of reference potentials VR0 to VR15 in accordance with upper data signals D0 to D3 and gives the selected reference potential to one electrode of the liquid crystal cell 2 for only a prescribed time.
