PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control method capable of improving fuel economy by changing an engine to low fuel consumption mode specifications. SOLUTION: A mode selected by a mode selection means 26 is confirmed every unit time between an engine controller and a machine body controller. An engine output torque curve is selected in a region 41. Engine target rotation speed is determined and input to a necessary fuel operation part 34 then. An engine output torque curve is selected according to a selected mode and is changed over to an engine output torque curve Ts corresponding to a standard mode and an engine output torque curve Te corresponding to a fuel consumption reduction mode in the region 41.
