<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document carrying device capable of reducing the size and cost of the device, by easily performing jam processing only by one driving source, without exclusively and separately using a jam processing improving mechanism, and to provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus having the device. <P>SOLUTION: Control is performed for stopping a driving row in a position (a neutral position) for releasing meshing of a planetary gear, when stopping document carrying in the middle by jam processing, by arranging the planetary gear in the driving row for carrying a document. The control is performed for stopping the driving row in a position for releasing sandwiching of a paper ejecting roller, when stopping the document carrying in the middle by the jam processing, by arranging a mechanism capable of selecting sandwiching and releasing of the paper ejecting roller.
