<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide route information which enables comparison of costs in the case of using an automobile with fares in the case of using public transport in consideration of the number of passengers in the case of using the automobile. <P>SOLUTION: A route information providing system can be mounted to a vehicle-mounted navigation system or an information apparatus such as a PC and a cellular phone used at home. A user inputs the number of passengers of an automobile and a destination to an input device. The route information providing system acquires map data and public transport data from an internal storage medium, an external database, or the like. An operation means computes a route using an automobile and cost per person using the automobile from a starting location to the destination in the case of using the automobile to compute costs using the automobile for each person on the basis of the number of persons. The operation means computes a route and fares using public transport from the starting location to the destination on the basis of the public transport data.
