PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact zoom lens constituted of three lens groups as a whole, constituted by arranging the respective groups so that the power of each group may be negative, positive and negative in order from an object side and achieving the shortening of the entire length of an optical system as a large-aperture zoom lens whose variable power ratio is about 3, and to provide a camera using the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens comprises the first lens group having negative refractive power as a whole, the second lens group having positive refractive power as a whole, and the third lens group having negative refractive power as a whole in order from the object side. The power is varied by moving the positions of the first lens group and the second lens group in an optical axis direction or moving the position of the third lens group in addition to the first lens group and the second lens group.
