PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damage detection method and device for a gear's tooth surface of a gear or a rolling contact surface of a bearing, capable of a detection at early stage with a high accuracy on the damage of the gear or bearing, with a simple and compact constitution. SOLUTION: The damage detection method for the gear's tooth surface of the gear comprises a step measuring an irregular reflection light intensity, by irradiating a laser light to the gear's tooth of the gear under rotation, a step which asks for on the intensity curvilinear data, which makes the tooth profile directional position as a variable, making the rotation numbers of the gear on the intensity of the measured irregular reflection light as a parameter, a step which searches for an intensity difference between the newest intensity curvilinear data and the intensity curvilinear data measured before the newest intensity curvilinear data are taken, a step which judges whether there is any range of not less than a prescribed value beyond the prescribed range on the tooth profile when this difference on the intensity becomes not less than the prescribed value.
