1,176,480. Variable-ratio gears. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 30 Dec., 1966 [21 Jan., 1966], No. 58293/66. Heading F2D. A vehicle transmission providing up to six forward ratios and three reverse ratios comprises a forward and a reverse planetary train connected in parallel and which are connected in series to an overlapping or compounded planetary train, all the trains having a common planet carrier. As shown, a torque converter 10 drives suns 30, 40 of a reverse train 26 and a forward train 28 having respectively selectively stationable ring gears 38, 44, and intermeshing planets 34, 32, and planets 42 on a carrier 36 which can be clutched to the turbine shaft 46 by a clutch 47. The carrier 36 forms the input of an overlapping train 60 having planets 64 which mesh a stationable ring gear 62 and mesh a sun gear 66 fast on an output shaft 68. The planets 64 also mesh planets 74 meshing a sun 70 which is stationable by a brake 69 and clutchable to the output shaft by a clutch 71. In a modification the torque converter has its reactor mounted on a one-way detent, and in another modification the forward and reverse trains 26, 28 are interchanged, and in a final modification the overlapping train 60 is replaced by a compounded train generally similar to the train 60 but having two interconnected ring gears meshing separate sets of planets.
|
