<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active material for a lithium secondary battery, and its manufacturing method, with excellent charge/discharge cycle characteristics with a prospective high capacity, as well as a lithium secondary battery using the active material. <P>SOLUTION: The active material for the lithium secondary battery is mainly composed of complex titanic oxide expressed in a general formula: A<SB>2</SB>Ti<SB>3</SB>O<SB>7</SB>with a crystal structure of a layer structure of a monoclinic Na<SB>2</SB>Ti<SB>3</SB>O<SB>7</SB>type. The complex oxide, with sodium titanium oxide produced from a sodium compound and titanium oxide as a starting material, is synthesized in an ion exchange reaction process.
