SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR RECEIVING VARIABLE ENCODING FORMAT AND TRANSMISSION CHANNEL NUMBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire, process and store video data and program guides extracted from input data encoded in a broadcasting variable encoding format.

SOLUTION: A receiver system 12 automatically adaptively tunes to broadcast signals that are variable in the number of channels that are transmitted, to their signal coding type and their modulation format. An antenna 15 receives a digital bitstream, representing video information encoded in one of a plurality of different formats and is transmitted on one of a plurality of transmission channels. A controller 17 selects a transmission channel from the plurality of channels to select the modulation format. An input processor 20 tunes to receive the modulation format. A unit 50 determines if valid data is being received on the selected transmission channel. The steps in the method are repeated, until the valid data is received.
