According to the invention, the recording of the mileage of a motor vehicle (1) for the determination of a motor vehicle insurance premium may be achieved, whereby a portable data support (11) is connected to a data input terminal (2) which is connected to a fuel pump nozzle (3). The data input terminal (2) receives the distance travelled from the motor vehicle (1), for example, from a transmitter on the motor vehicle (1), or from the data support (11). A vehicle identifier for the motor vehicle (1), stored on the data support (11), is read by the data input terminal (2) and transmitted together with the distance travelled to a computer-based central control (5) via a telecommunication network (4). Several transaction receipts each with a time stamp for the motor vehicle (1) are stored in the central control (5). The central control (5) determines a total distance covered in the calculation period by the motor vehicle (1), depending on the stored distances covered and a motor vehicle insurance premium based thereon. The recording of the vehicle identifier and the distance travelled inputted on a data input terminal (2), connected to a fuel pump nozzle (3), permits the vehicle-specific recording of the actual mileage on filling up the motor vehicle (1), without additional data recording systems for operating parameters and communication modules needing to be installed on the motor vehicle (1).
