PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acrylic or a methacrylic acid-based copolymer efficiently removing soil of clothes, etc., having an excellent re-deposition preventing ability and useful for a detergent composition. SOLUTION: The (meth)acrylic acid copolymer comprises≥30 to <95 mass% of a constituent unit (a) derived from an acrylic or a methacrylic acid-based monomer (A),≥5 to <70 mass% of a constituent unit (b) derived from an unsaturated monomer (B), >0 to≤50 mass% of a constituent unit (c) derived from an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate-based monomer (C) and/or a constituent unit (d) derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer (D) as essential constituent units. The acrylic or methacrylic acid-based monomer (A) is represented by formula (1). The unsaturated monomer (B) is represented by formula (2).
