PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily and stably obtain read images, even if overshoot or light quantity reduction occurs in a lamp which irradiates a document with light, in a document reading apparatus. SOLUTION: A light source 121 irradiates a document to be read with light, while scanning the relevant document in a predetermined direction. Optical systems 122-125 guide reflection light to an image sensor 126. A light-shielding plate 129 is disposed so as to slide, in front of the image sensor 126, on the optical path of reflection light and adjusts the quantity of light to be incident to the image sensor 126. A light quantity adjusting section 160 adjusts the sliding amount of the light-shielding plate 129 so that the output value of the image sensor 126, based on the reflected light reflected from a reference document disposed along with a scanning direction becomes a prescribed value.
