PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new remedy or the like of a disease caused by excess differentiation of osteoclast, such as osteoporosis and chronic rheumatoid arthritis by newly identifying a factor associated with the differentiation of the osteoclast, and utilizing the factor. SOLUTION: The depressant and/or inhibitor of bone absorption containing pleiotrophin, the depressant and/or inhibitor of differentiation of osteoclast, containing the pleiotrophin, the prophylactic and/or therapeutic agent of a disease caused by the excess differentiation of the osteoclast, containing the pleiotrophin, and the method for identifying the depressant and/or inhibitor of the differentiation of the osteoclast by using the pleiotrophin are provided based on the finding that the pleiotrophin depresses and/or inhibits the differentiation of the osteoclast.
