PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material kind discriminating device for detecting highly accurate information on a sheet material, in a sheet material carrying passage of an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: This sheet material kind discriminating device has an impact applying member imparting impact to the sheet material, a detecting member contacting with the sheet material when imparting the impact and outputting a signal by detecting the impact via the sheet material, a discriminating means discriminating a kind of sheet material on the basis of the signal, and a holding means for holding the sheet material carried between the impact applying part and the detecting member.
