The device has a data processing unit, a display unit and a sensor for measuring speed and steering angle of a motor vehicle. An image sensor (2) such as camera, is aligned for monitoring and receiving an image of a lateral surrounding of the motor vehicle. Distance information about object characteristics (3) is obtained from a sequence of received image, where the motor vehicle exhibits a speed not equal to zero. The position of the motor vehicle relative to the object characteristics is considered based on the acceleration and steering angle.
