The method involves surface-handling a cylinder lift (10) e.g. printing plate, of a print substrate processing machine e.g. sheet processing rotary printing machine, when the lift is detached from a printing form cylinder (4.1). A surface of the cylinder lift is loaded with a handling fluid, which contains a processing substance during detachment, and is subsequently cleaned by a printing ink. The surface of the lift is coated with the substance during loading, where the substance protects the surface of the lift at the coated positions before a direct contact with the ink. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a handling device for a cylinder lift detachable from a cylinder of a print substrate processing machine (2) a print substrate processing machine, in particular printing machine or sheet processing rotary printing machine for lithographic offset printing.
