PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact auto tensioner that appropriately keeps a tension of a belt. SOLUTION: The auto tensioner 1 includes a housing 20, a rocking arm 30 and a pulley 40. A coil spring 50 is housed in a spring reception chamber 60 formed between the housing 20 and the rocking arm 30. One end of the coil spring 50 is connected to the housing 20 and the other end thereof is connected to the rocking arm 30. The rocking arm 30 is urged by the coil spring 50 in the rocking direction X which is a direction in which the coil spring 50 is wound up. The housing 20 has an inner peripheral surface 25 which makes a contact with the coil spring 50. When the rocking arm 30 rocks in the rocking direction X, the coil spring 50 rotates substantially freely with respect to the inner peripheral surface 25. When the rocking arm 30 rocks in a rocking direction Y, an outer peripheral surface of the coil spring 50 is pressed against the inner peripheral surface 25 so that the coil spring 50 stands still with respect to the inner peripheral surface 25.
