PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly heat a metallic material in the width direction, in a direct-firing heating furnace without arranging a special mechanism in the furnace. SOLUTION: When the metallic material is heated while transporting in the direct-firing heating furnace provided with furnace side wall burners, the heating in the width direction of the metallic material is uniformed by making to collide the combustion flames of one pair of the furnace side wall burners disposed so as to be faced in the furnace width direction, at the center in the furnace width direction in order to positively heat the width center part to the edge parts of the metallic material where easily become over-heating.
