PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder which is able to print continuously without the interruption of printing operation which occurs due to stopping a carriage once in the discharge position at a preliminary discharge. SOLUTION: By the way of having the control for the preliminary discharge separately for every plural recording heads 20, even while the recording head located in a printing area performs a usual discharge, other recording head can perform the preliminary discharge with a discharge period different from the one of the usual printing when the head comes to the position of the preliminary discharge.
