An expandable balloon 1, eg of silicone rubber, is inserted into an exhaust system 5 of an internal combustion engine, and inflated by means of compressed gas until an airtight seal exists. Once the balloon is in place and inflated, the engine will be unable to start due to excessive exhaust gasses in the combustion chamber preventing the fuel and air igniting. This invention could also be used on slow moving or stationary vehicles where there is a requirement to stop the vehicle's engine. An inflation unit 3 having a compressed gas canister operated by a trigger 4 may be used to inflate the balloon 1 via a valve 2. The inflation unit 3 may be disconnected from the balloon 1 if required once the balloon is safely in place within the exhaust system. If the exhaust system 5 has more than one tailpipe, a balloon 1 will be required for each tailpipe. |
