The compounding of a rubber or a plastic material with substances affecting the viscosity and mechanical properties of the product, e.g. sulphur, zinc oxide and accelerators, loading agents, fillers, plasticizers, hardeners, catalysts and pigments involves swelling the rubber or plastic material in a solvent, or cooling it, e.g. by liquid air or nitrogen, to render it brittle and friable, or subjecting it to these two treatments in succession. The rubbers are exemplified by natural rubber and GR-S, the plastic material by polyvinyl chloride, and the solvents by cyclohexanone and benzene. |
