For automated recording and marking of analogue an digital audio/video signals, ancillary and control information is used which is transmitted in parallel to the audio and/or video signal, namely "Item Toggle Bit", "Item Running Bit" or "Music/Speech - Identification". By the interconnected analysis of the ancillary and control information "Item Toggle Bit" and "Item Running Bit" or "Item Toggle Bit" and "Speech/Music-Identification" the control software of a recording device is put in the position to automatically perform the recording, the precise determination of the start and stop time of the recording and the addressing of designating text for the audio and video recording on the basis of the ancillary and control information in accordance with the settings of the user (Figure 7).
