A remote controller comprises a receiver (365) for receiving programming information for programming the remote controller and a transmitter (355) for transmitting remote control signals for controlling remote equipment. Conveniently the receiver (365) is sensitive to the playback of audio or video content to receive therefrom information for programming the remote controller. In this way, a programmable remote controller may be programmed using playback of appropriately encoded audio or video content, for example, using a combination of a DVD player to play the content and a television to reproduce the audio and/or video content. The program information may identify a command protocol existing in the controller memory, or may itself comprise a command protocol. Video content may be in the form of a barcode to be displayed. The programming information may be supplied on a carrier eg a DVD disc together with other information eg relating to a game or film, in order to program the controller specifically for use with that carrier and information. |
