Laminates which possess the property of cold forming without substantial elastic recovery and which according to the invention are subjected to cold bending, embossing or drawing, comprise thermoplastic sheets of thickness 0À005-1À4 inches having bonded to each face thereof a metal foil, e.g. of aluminium, steel, copper or brass, of thickness 0À00025- 0À01 inch, the combined thickness of the foils being less than that of the core material. The foils in any one laminate may be of different metals and different thicknesses. The thermoplastic materials usable comprise polythene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyamides, polycarbonates, vinyl aryls, vinylidene halides, vinyl esters, acrylic acid and acrylic acid nitrile polymers, and alkyl esters of maleic or fumaric acids; many examples are given. A particular material mentioned is the thermoplastic polyether poly-2,2-bis-(oxyphenyl) propane. The materials may be foamed. The laminates may be made by coating the foils with a thin layer of the core material and then hot pressing the assembled layers. Cold-forming may be effected on the site of use and products so made may include cooling and heating ducts and thermal and sound insulating components.</p> |
