[Also in Division F4] Contact apparatus such as a cooling tower for heat exchange between air and water includes a packing 12 or 14 comprising a stack of corrugated' sheets made of a plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride stacked so that the corrugations of adjacent sheets 28, 29 lie at an angleα, Fig. 1, relative to one another of between 40 and 80 degrees viewed in the direction of air flow through the packing. The inclination from the horizontal of the corrugations in each sheet may be the same for all the sheets (as shown in pack 14) or the corrugations 30 in alternate sheets may be more steeply inclined than in the remaining sheets (as shown in pack 12). The sheets are secured to one another by binding wires 25, netting or plastic straps, by glueing, or by a locally applied solvent for the plastics material. The sheets may be additionally formed with fine creases or wrinkles 36, Fig. 2, of triangular cross-section and from 0.5 to 3 m/m in depth. These serve to spread the water over the sheet surface and may extend transversely to the main corrugations (see also Fig. 3). Alternatively they may extend obliquely to the main corrugations (Fig. 4) in a manner which directs the water towards those edges of the sheet first contacted by the air stream. The main corrugations may be flat-sided (Fig. 5) and the fine creases or wrinkles are formed on these flat sides, the crests and troughs of the main corrugations being smooth. In a further form (Fig. 6) the sheets are undulate in two directions and additionally may be formed with the fine creases or wrinkles.
