A position measuring system for a hydraulic cylinder is provided to extend the valid duration life of a device by reducing abrasion according to improved surface property of a piston rod. A position measuring system for a hydraulic cylinder includes a magnet, at least one sensor(30,40), and a piston rod(10). The piston rod includes a metallic core and a groove structure(11), which is formed in an axial direction. The metallic core has high magnetic susceptibility. The groove structure is filled with metal(12), which has a lower magnetic susceptibility than that of the core so that at least one sensor measures magnetic field of the magnet changed according to a position of the groove structure. The at least one sensor measures the magnetic field in a specific direction. The groove structure is composed of grooves and a projection.
