Novel compounds of the formula <FORM:1107737/C2/1> wherein A is -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-, R is H, alkyl, aryl, bromoaryl, acyl or aralkyl, the R's being the same or different, and R1 is H, alkyl, carbamyl, aryl or nitroaryl, may be prepared from the compound <FORM:1107737/C2/2> by heating with the corresponding hydrazine derivative of formula H2NNHR1, where R1 is as defined above, in an acidic or neutral medium, with the optional steps of hydrogenation of the olefinic bond and/or etherification or acylation of the OH groups. Therapeutic compositions having estrogenic and growth-promoting activity comprise a compound of the first formula given above, together with a suitable diluent, and may take the form of an animal feed, or an injection suspension in, e.g. peanut oil.
