Disclosed are porous silica particles having an average particle diameter of 5-50 nm which are composed of a hydrolysis product and/or hydrolysis-condensation product of a silicon compound represented by the formula (1) below and another silicon compound represented by the formula (2) below. Also disclosed is a method for producing such porous silica particles. R1mSiX4-m (1) R2n SiX4-n (2) (In the above formulae, R1 represents an alkyl group having 1-8 carbon atoms; X independently represents an alkoxy group having 1-4 carbon atoms, a halogeno group, an isocyanate group (-N=C=O), a carboxyl group, an alkyloxycarbonyl group having 2-4 carbon atoms or an alkylamino group having 1-4 carbon atoms; m represents an integer of 0-1; R2 represents an alkenyl group having 2-8 carbon atoms, an acryloxyalkyl group having 4-8 carbon atoms or a methacryloxyalkyl group having 5-8 carbon atoms; and n represents an integer of 1-3.
