A method and an apparatus for estimating a symbol timing in a wireless communication system are provided to minimize an ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) by accurately estimating a symbol timing offset by using a channel impulse response by using channel impulse response in an OFDM communication system. An apparatus for estimating a symbol timing in an OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) communication system includes an IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) unit(313) and a symbol offset estimator(315). The IFFT unit performs an IFFT process on a channel signal, which is estimated on a channel estimator. The symbol offset estimator receives an output signal from the IFFT unit, varies a search region to detect a peak power, and calculates a channel delay by using a variable threshold value to estimate accurately the symbol offset. |
