A system (10) for encoding mail includes magazine (40) to hold mail and transport (82) to convey mail from magazine (40). Queue (20) displays moving mail pieces received from transport (82). System (10) has keyboard (32) for operator entry of data from mail on queue (24) and printhead (72) to receive mail from transport (92). Processor (30) is operatively coupled to keyboard (32) and printhead (72), and controls queue (20) and transports (82, 92). Processor (30) includes an address signal corresponding to at least a portion of an address of a mail piece entered with keyboard (32), a routing code signal determined from the address signal, a performance signal corresponding to data entry capability of the operator, and a queue speed signal corresponding to speed of queue (20). Processor (30) adjusts speed as a function of the performance signal and the queue speed signal, and printhead (72) places a routing code on mail in response to the routing code signal.
