1,109,621. Nuclear fuel. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 31 Jan., 1966 [8 March, 1965], No. 4154/66. Heading G6C. Spherical refractory UO 2 nuclear fuel particles each have a central closed space occupying most of the sphere. They may be prepared by oxidizing UO 2 particles, mixing with CaOTiO 2 powder, pressing into pellets, crushing, screening, heating the granules in an oxyacetylene flame to form spheroids, cooling, reducing in hydrogen, and screening. The oxidation step may take place in air at 180‹ to 300‹ C. to form a higher uranium oxide. Other additives are CaO-TiO 2 -CaF 2 , TiO 2 , TiO 2 -Nb 2 O 5 and V 2 O 5' The particles may be embedded in a stainless-steel matrix as described in Specification 993,110 to form fuel elements for use in nuclear reactors or thermionic generators.
