In a fast nuclear reactor, the coolant is lead or a suitable lead alloy (e.g. Pb-Mg) which takes up heat in the reactor core 11 and transfers it to water circulating in pipes 16, 17; when the coolant has solidified it may be melted by circulation of water heated in tank 23. The metal coolant is circulated within the container 18 by means of pump 13. Steam from pipe 22 leads to a turbine for generating electricity.
