A data output apparatus of a semiconductor memory device and a control method thereof are provided to reduce layout area and to simplify circuit configuration. A plurality of pads is designated for single or combined use in at least two kinds of unit data output modes. A plurality of data lines transmits data of a memory bank(100) to the outside. A data output control unit(300) outputs data of the data line selected by a unit data output mode signal to enable the unit data output mode and selective combination of control signals generated using an address, to a signal line corresponding to the plurality of pads.
