A polyepoxide composition which may be cured and used in the preparation of self-extinguishing or flame retardant castings, laminates, impregnating agents or coatings comprises: (1) a polyepoxide, i.e. having on average more than one epoxy group per molecule; and (2) from 2 to 25 parts by wt. per 100 parts of (1) of finely divided red phosphorus. (2) May be in a stabilized form, e.g. by precipitating thereon MgO, and it may have a particle size such that at least 90% passes a 200 mesh U.S. standard sieve. (1) May be a glycidyl polyether of a polyhydric phenol, e.g. bisphenol A. The composition may also contain conventional curing agents, solvents, diluents and fillers.ALSO:Glass cloth is coated or impregnated with a flame retardant or self-extinguishing composition comprising: (1) a polyepoxide, i.e. one containing on average more than one epoxy group per molecule; (2) from 2 to 25 parts by wt. per 100 parts of (1) of finely divided red phosphorus; and (3) conventional curing agents for (1), e.g. polybasic acid anhydrides or polyamines. The coated fabrics may be partially cured (B-staged) by heating at elevated temperatures and used in the manufacture of prepregs which may be subsequently used in the preparation of laminates.
|
