The invention relates to a device and a method for the distribution of audiovisual data to cinemas. According to the invention, the audiovisual data to be distributed is received by a distribution centre and written into an input memory; the data written into the input memory is checked, formatted and, if specified, is encoded and read into another memory; further metadata is produced, said metadata being associated with the audiovisual data and likewise stored in the memory; corresponding inputs activate the transmission of messages to the cinemas which are to receive the audiovisual data; and a wideband transmission of the audiovisual data is performed following acknowledgement by the cinemas.
