The object is to provide a tooth root formation promoter or a method for promoting the tooth root formation, which can promote the formation of a tooth root and is suitable in various aspects of dental therapy. Disclosed is a tooth root formation promoter which comprises, as an active ingredient, a protein belonging to FGF8 subfamily which is a member of fibroblast growth factors. Also disclosed is a method for promotion of the teeth root formation in a mammal. The method comprises administering a protein belonging to FGF8 subfamily to the mammal.
