A character input method of a portable terminal equipped with a wheel-type input device and a device are provided to enable a user to input characters by using the wheel-type input device without installing a character input keypad, thereby realizing miniaturization of the terminal. Consonants are allocated to each of four divided sides(11-14) of a wheel-type input device. The number of the allocated consonants does not exceed 4 on one divided part, and allocation sequence of each consonant is defined. Based on a divided part allocated for a consonant to be inputted and allocation sequence of the corresponding consonant on the divided part, a user inputs consonants by consecutively pressing/moving the divided parts to next divided parts as many as numbers in accordance with arrangement sequence of the corresponding divided parts. The user inputs vowels by combinations of a central button(15) and consecutive inputting of the up/down/right/left divided parts by two. |
