PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and small display device for an escalator, displaying an arrow indicating a step position and characters to attract passengers' attention etc. and having good appearance in terms of design. SOLUTION: Red LEDs 4R and green LEDs 4G are arranged in a peripheral edge part below a balustrade side panel 1 on a side wall along a step traveling path of the escalator. On the surface of the step 2 side of the balustrade side panel 1, the characters, "Watch your step" and the arrow indicating the position where steps 2 appear are printed with paint colored with light of long wavelength (red), and the characters, "Do not step up on the escalator" are printed with paint colored with light of short wavelength (green). Light generated when the red LEDs 4R and green LEDs 4G are lit passes through the railing side panel 1. As a result, the characters, "Watch your step" and the arrow are colored with the red light and are displayed, and the characters, "Do not step up on the escalator" are colored with the green light and displayed.
